CONTACT LENS QUESTIONS

Q. What needs done to obtain contact lenses?

A.1. The annual eye health exam is performed. This is always needed before proceeding with the contact lens fitting and evaluation.

** 2. Additional testing specific to the fitting of contact lenses is performed

* 3. Evaluation is performed selecting the most appropriate lenses for your eyes

* 4. Trial diagnostic lenses are selected

* 5. Contact lens handling instructions and lens care with the correct sample solutions are reviewed with the patient

 * 6. Contact lens progress visits are performed to insure good vision and healthy lens wear and once these are completed a final contact lens correction is determined.

Contact lens patients require additional testing and monitoring over and above what is done during a routine eye exam. Contact lenses are medical devices and even though they may feel fine, there are health risks that must be taken seriously. If you are currently wearing contact lenses they need to be evaluated while you are wearing them to determine if the fit is fine and no adverse effects are occurring. If a better alternative is available recommendations will be made. This is in addition to the basic eye exam and a separate charge is incurred for this part of the exam.

Q. Why is there a contact lens evaluation fee in addition to the standard eye exam fee?

A. In order to renew your contact lens prescription, your doctor performs the following tests on a yearly basis. These procedures are not part of a standard eye exam. Additional care may be needed for extended wear contacts and certain speciality designs.

**Corneal topography – a digital color map of the surface of the cornea to monitor shape and curvature, which may be affected by contact lens wear.

*Slit lamp microscope examination of the contact lens on the eye to check the lens fit.

*Slit lamp microscope examination of the cornea, conjunctiva and eyelid tissues, to check the eye health and to look for adverse effects from contact lens wear.

*Contact lens refraction to determine the correct contact lens prescription power (contact lens prescriptions are different than eyeglass prescriptions).

*Review new lens designs and materials that may improve comfort and/or health

Contact lens fitting and evaluation fees are separate from your annual eye health examination fees.
